It doesn’t matter where the audition is, there’s always at least one badass  guy (or gal) who will absolutely destroy everybody. You might as well just go home.

I can relate to that from the other end of the spectrum. Once at the beginning of my teaching career I went to a job fair and they had us wear different colors of name tags to represent our credential status and at the time, I was an intern and would have worn a blue name tag. I f**k that, I said, and put on a red tag because I wasn’t about to walk around with a loser label on my chest.

But your last audition, the one that got you the 3rd chair in the Austin orchestra, were you That Guy?

Not the symphony, but sort of for the opera. I won that after the first round, with no additional rounds. I had a good day.

Well, I don’t know who was expected. There were a couple of local players who didn’t show up who would have given me a run for my money. But as I said, I had a good day, and it was one and done.

You have to apply.Most auditions will let anybody apply, others are more selective.
